A scoreboard turns a weekly game into a season. It gives every night a little stake, gives the month a champion and gives the club a history. Here is a simple system that holds up week after week.
In American mahjong every hand on the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card has a value printed next to it, usually 25, 30, 35, 40, 50 or 75. The simplest and fairest system for a social club is: the player who makes mahjong gets the value of her hand, and nobody loses points. No settling between players, no negative numbers, no arguments about who discarded what.
Some clubs add bonuses from the card's own rules (doubling when the hand has no jokers, or when the winner picks the winning tile herself). They are fine if everyone agrees in advance, but keep the list of bonuses short: every extra rule is one more thing to argue about at ten at night.
The number one cause of a wrong scoreboard is recording from memory at the end of the night. Instead:
Points accumulate from the first night of the month to the last. The leader at any moment "wears the crown". Showing the standings during the month, not only at the end, is what makes the last two nights exciting: people come to defend or to catch up.
Ties happen. Decide in advance how you break them. Common choices: the tie stands and the prize is shared; or the player with more mahjongs wins; or the player with the single highest hand wins. Any rule works as long as it's written before the month starts.
On the first day of the next month the standings freeze. The champion is announced, the prize of the month is handed out on the next game night and the month goes into the Hall of Fame: a permanent list of every month's champion. After closing, nobody edits a past month. If a mistake is found later, note it, learn from it, and move on; reopening months is how scoreboards lose trust.
The prize is what makes the crown mean something, and it doesn't have to be big. Clubs usually fund it with a small monthly fee (ten to twenty dollars per player): part pays for little gifts during the month, the rest for the champion's prize. Announce the prize at the start of the month, keep it visible, and let the champion be the one who shows it off in the group photo.
Some clubs add a condition: to compete for the prize you must have hosted at least once, or be current on your fee. It keeps the club fair for the people who put in the work. If you add a condition, say it on the first day of the month, not the last.
Keeping that in a notebook is possible but heavy. A shared spreadsheet is better. An app like Mah Tables does it live: the sub-admin taps the player and the line at the table, the scoreboard updates on everyone's phone, the month closes itself on the 1st and the champion goes to the Hall of Fame.
Mah Tables records every mahjong at the table by card line, adds up the month, crowns the leader, closes the month on the 1st and keeps the Hall of Fame. Free on iPhone, in English and Spanish.
The most common system is that the player who makes mahjong receives the value printed next to her hand on the NMJL card (25 to 75 points) and nobody loses points. Points add up by month and the leader is the month's champion.
Whatever your club decided before the month began. Common rules: the prize is shared; the player with more mahjongs wins; or the player with the single highest hand wins. Write the rule down in advance.
On the first day of the next month. The standings freeze, the champion is announced, the prize is handed out on the next game night and the month goes into the Hall of Fame. Past months are not edited.
